About Matterdale Parish

Matterdale Parish Council recently set up a working party to address the issues raised in a petition. Any documents produced by or on behalf of that group can be found here.

Matterdale has become an important Parish providing an area of outstanding natural beauty which attracts tourists from all over the world to enjoy its stunning scenery and enjoy outdoor pursuits of fell walking and sailing.

Covering some 17,500 acres and with a resident population of around 500, it hosts as many as 7,000 visitors at peak times, staying at the many camping and caravan sites, B&B’s, self-catering accommodation and hotels.

The hundred or so farming families that prospered in the Parish in the 1900s have diminished to little over ten percent today.
